In This Tender Land, William Kent Krueger brings us another deeply moving coming-of-age novel reminiscent of Ordinary Grace. Krueger is lyrical in his description of both environment and emotion. The four young protagonists are depicted with compassion, not sentimentality. Imperfect, they struggle to find a place in a society that is obsessed with scarcity and a fear of the other. Many analogies can be drawn between the treatment of Native Americans and orphans in the early twentieth century and our present day treatment of migrants/refugees at the southern border. Krueger's love for the Minnesota landscape and people shines through his prose.
Inspiring and transformational, this is a recommended read for fans of Ordinary Grace, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate, and Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.
In My Footprints we are invited into the beautiful imaginative world of a young Asian girl, the daughter of two moms, as she walks home from school in the snow after being bullied and teased at school. The illustrations are crisp and evocative. Bao Phi's words are immersive. This is a book to be read aloud, acted out, and pondered over.
