Description

Complete coverage of earthquake-resistant concrete building design

Written by a renowned seismic engineering expert, this authoritative resource discusses the theory and practice for the design and evaluation of earthquakeresisting reinforced concrete buildings. The book addresses the behavior of reinforced concrete materials, components, and systems subjected to routine and extreme loads, with an emphasis on response to earthquake loading.

Design methods, both at a basic level as required by current building codes and at an advanced level needed for special problems such as seismic performance assessment, are described. Data and models useful for analyzing reinforced concrete structures as well as numerous illustrations, tables, and equations are included in this detailed reference.

Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings covers:

  • Seismic design and performance verification
  • Steel reinforcement
  • Concrete
  • Confined concrete
  • Axially loaded members
  • Moment and axial force
  • Shear in beams, columns, and walls
  • Development and anchorage
  • Beam-column connections
  • Slab-column and slab-wall connections
  • Seismic design overview
  • Special moment frames
  • Special structural walls
  • Gravity framing
  • Diaphragms and collectors
  • Foundations

About the Author

Jack Moehle, Ph.D., is the T.Y. and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He was founding director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. Dr. Moehle played a leading role on several teams to develop professional guidance and design standards, including Improved Seismic Design Guidelines for California Highway Bridges (ATC 32); Guidelines for Evaluation and Repair of Masonry and Concrete Walls (FEMA 306); Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings (FEMA 273); Development of Next-Generation Performance-Based Seismic Design Procedures for New and Existing Buildings (FEMA P-58); and Guidelines for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings (Tall Buildings Initiative, PEER). He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, an Honorary Member of the Structural Engineers Association of California, and an elected Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Moehle chaired the seismic provisions subcommittee of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee from 1995 to 2014, and is the chair of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee for the 2014-2020 code cycle.
