Three nieces, Louise, Alice, and Emma, are put in charge of their aunt Agatha’s house. This might sound mundane, but the illustrations in this book reveal that the three girls are far from conventional. Alice’s sneezes are full of flowers, Emma loves to float as she reads, and there are harps in the greenhouse and whales in the garden pond.
 
Tres sobrinas, Louise, Alice y Emma, están a cargo de la casa de su tía Agatha. En la carta explican cómo todo va bien, de forma muy convencional. Pero al mirar a las ilustraciones, el lector notará que las tres muchachas están muy lejos de ser convencionales. Porque los estornudos Alice están llenos de flores, porque a Emma le encanta flotar mientras lee y porque la casa está habitada por arpías en el invernadero y ballenas en el estanque del jardín.
